What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral with crystals which form long, thin fibers. Throughout history, it has been known for its insulation qualities. It was spun and woven into cloth and used in wicks by the first century Greeks and Romans. It was not commonly used until the nineteenth century when extensive deposits were discovered in Canada and it was utilized as an insulating component in thermal insulation for boilers, pipes and other high temperature applications and as a reinforcement material for a variety of products.

Because of the unique physical properties of asbestos; fire resistance, high tensile strength, poor heat & electrical conductivity, and being generally impervious to chemicals—asbestos proved well suited for many uses in the construction trades. It has been used in literally thousands of building products.

Health Risks Of Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos exposure poses the greatest risk to the respiratory system. The onset of disease can take anywhere from 10 to 40 years to manifest! Although no “safe level” of exposure has been determined, there appears to be a dose-response relationship between exposure and onset of disease.

There are 3 main lung conditions related to asbestos exposure. They are asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma. Asbestosis is a degenerative & progressive disease characterized by the fibrotic scarring of the lungs, causing shortness of breath. Exposure to asbestos increases the risk of getting lung cancer. A terrible synergistic relationship has been noted between cigarette smoking an the likelihood of cancer.  A person who smokes & who works with asbestos is 50 times more likely to contract lung cancer than the normal non-smoking population. The final condition is Mesothelioma. This is a cancer of the chest cavity. It is very rare, but spreads rapidly and is always fatal.
